“A project dedicated to welcoming, educating, and providing schooling at Casa Matt in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, India, to help orphaned, underprivileged, or abused girls believe in a dream, the dream of a better future.”
Casa Matt was founded in memory of Matteo, who had a deep love for learning, work, travel, India, and its children.
The journey began in 2004, following one of the most catastrophic disasters of modern times, the Indian Ocean tsunami, which devastated southern Tamil Nadu.
Casa Matt was created as a reflection of Matteo’s values, a place where orphaned, impoverished, and vulnerable girls, often victims of abuse, could find shelter, education, and hope. Its mission is to help them believe in their future and gain the respect and recognition they deserve—as daughters, wives, mothers, workers, professionals, and ultimately as free and independent women.
Over the years, the number of girls has grown. Today, 35 girls between the ages of 4 and 17 call Casa Matt their home. As their needs evolved, so did the necessity for a larger, more modern home and a qualified team to guide them toward the ultimate goal of the Matt Project—preparing them for a self-sufficient and dignified future.
On April 7, 2018, in the presence of President Aldo Sacchi and CEO Stefano Sacchi, alongside their families, the "New Casa Matt" was inaugurated in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. Matteo’s dream of providing the girls with a real home had finally come true.
Today, Casa Matt stands on a 1,500 sqm plot, with plans for future expansion. The 800 sqm red-brick building features traditional "Jail-style" walls, designed to create natural shade and ventilation, spread across two floors and a spacious terrace overlooking the ocean, river, and surrounding countryside.
The rooms are furnished in a simple and comfortable way: living room, study area, leisure area, dining room, dormitories, bathrooms, infirmary room, kitchen, laundry and service room, without forgetting the utilities necessary to complete a good welcome and education: reading places, computer places, wifi communication systems, TV, stereo and projection systems and security systems with video surveillance.
The home is simple yet comfortable, designed to meet the girls’ daily needs, including a living area, study zone, recreation area, dining hall, dormitories, bathrooms, infirmary, kitchen, laundry, and service rooms. Additionally, contemporary conveniences create a complete and enriching environment, including dedicated spaces for reading, computer stations, Wi-Fi communication systems, TV, audio, and projection systems, as well as security surveillance and monitoring systems.
Casa Matt is run by a specialized, full-time resident staff of eight professionals who live with the girls. The team consists of: a director. two teachers, two caregivers ("Mammies"), two cooks, one gardener, one driver/security guard who handles all tasks.
Casa Matt and its entire staff are committed to supporting the girls as they live and grow, teaching them to respect themselves, others, and the world around them as something to be valued. They are encouraged to pursue their education, develop hobbies and passions, and cultivate independent thinking, which will serve as a foundation for a better future as daughters, wives, mothers, and professionals in an increasingly complex society.
Casa Matt is the first recognized and pioneering example of a modern home for shelter, schooling, and education in Tamil Nadu, South India.
