Le patate: buone e sostenibili

Potatoes: good and sustainable

This simple tuber originally from Latin America is certainly one of the most popular foods on the planet, used and cooked in many different ways. Good

In Italy, it is among the most consumed foods. In this regard, a survey carried out and promoted by UNAPA, the National Union of Potato Producers Associations in Italy, co-financed by the European Union, shows that:

  • 80% of Italians say they eat potatoes at least once a week , and three out of ten people eat a potato-based dish several times a week
  • Potatoes are the fifth most popular food on Italian tables, before rice (eaten at least once a week by 77% of Italians).

What many people don't know is that potatoes provide fewer calories than bread or pasta and are more filling. This food is often associated with calories and too many carbohydrates, but in reality, from a nutritional point of view, they are much healthier than other foods.

Another positive aspect of this simple ingredient is the one related to sustainability: Potato cultivation is one of the most sustainable . CO2 emissions expressed in kilograms for each kilo of food produced are: 4.5 for rice; 1.7 for corn; 1.6 for wheat and rye; 1.2 for barley; 0.46 for potatoes.

Potatoes are a staple food: 4th in world production after wheat, rice and corn. But what is changing in recent years goes beyond the simplicity of a humble vegetable: the consumption of processed potato-based products is really becoming more and more popular. There are now many products on the market that have this raw material as their main ingredient, the choice is really vast, with different formats and flavors.
